When renovated in the 1950s and 1970s windows throughout the building were covered. This included all chapel windows and the clerestory windows located in the recreation hall. Today, two of the six chapel windows have been restored to their original condition. In the 1990s an addition was constructed to address the need for increased space. This alteration was sensitive to the existing building in terms of form, exterior materials and interior details. Original interior details and materials including plaster ornamentation, carved wooden doors, a raked hardwood floor and custom furnishings in the chapel were retained and contribute to the quality and integrity of the building.

This semester in history, we talked about many things that I would not think about on a daily basis outside of school. Our lessons made me think in new ways about different concepts. The two things that made me most interested were learning about the Dakota Access Pipeline involving the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the requirements for voting for the President of the United States. DAPL made me more aware of our environment and realize how one thing could drastically affect so many areas of our world. It also made me see that there are many cons but there are also many pros.…

As I am walking alongside the tall, thick, tan wall, I wonder how much history is stored inside. Two steps past the second entrance door and I am standing in the historical landmark, Mission San Juan Capistrano. Before me is the long courtyard rooms that create the perimeter of the mission, a small garden in the entrance with multiple trails, a beautiful, tall, octagonal fountain filled with green lily pads and white blossomed flowers, and to the left, standing high is what looks like a destroyed temple. Various little trails that all lead to different sections.…

With the increase in the use of social media, people can broadcast their opinions left and right about feminism, meninism, and everything in between. The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, presents a deceptively simple exterior. The ungarnished brick walls lack intrigue or grandeur, the doorway is simply a means of entrance rather than a spectacle, yet over 55,000 visitors are drawn to the location every year (YouTube). The sanctuary inside is just as plain, aside from fourteen imposing murals created by the chapel’s namesake, Mark Rothko. They adorn bare walls, constantly shifting appearance with the light cast from the chapel’s skylight (Dowell). They seem to be the only lively aspects of an otherwise static place.…

Last week, I listened a lecture, which spoke in the Hendricks Chapel, and I learned a lot from that. The main topic of that lecture is “social inequality”, which is an inevitable issue in this society. I remembered a person said:” you are a culmination of chances made long before you were born that determine if access is inhibited or promoted in your ability to succeed.” I totally agree with this statement, because our family really plays a significant role in our life.…
