The justice system does not care about the seriousness of a crime; they do not use the seriousness of a crime to determine the punishment. The Bill of Rights says, “Bail should never be set too high, and punishment should never be cruel and unusual” (Amendment VIII). This amendment shows just how little the justice system takes into consideration the crimes that are committed. He wanted to get Nicks attention because he was not hearing what he was trying to tell him. Nick thought that Clyde was doing it all for revenge, but he was wanting someone to help him fill the emptiness that Darby caused within him. Nick was only thinking about what would have happened if they would have lost, Darby and Aimes would have walked away without any punishment, and Nick’s conviction rate would be ruined. Clyde would have been fine with that if they would have tried to win, but Nick did not even want to try and help
