In smaller sized high school, it’s easy to say word spreads fast. Whether that be through mouth or text or a small rusty bathroom stall. The thing is, the words told by others aren’t always true. People exaggerate to make the story better. Sadly, Alice’s reality turned into a “better” story. Alice’s story was told through the documentation of four high schoolers. Elaine, the most popular girl in school, Kurt, the smart nerdy kid, Josh, the footballer who’s best friend died, and Kelsie, Alice’s ex-best friend. Her story was told through rumors and misconceptions. Everything that was said about Alice turned to be false, the truth though, was never said to more than a handful people. Alice has lost all of her self worth and lives a life of constant pain. In the last chapter she describes the impact of bullying like “a million paper cuts on my heart” (Mathieu 192). She explains that the pain that other have caused her had to be gradual, “so there could be enough time for me to become subhuman in their eyes” (Mathieu 193). Ever since the rumors began, she’s kept to herself and in total isolation. This is typical as van der Wal wrote “Being repeatedly bullied has been associated with an increased risk of depression, (7-13) suicidal ideation, (8) and loneliness” (Wal, Marcel, Cees, and Hirasing). Through the story, you can see that the rumors are limitless. As Kurt noted, “There’s no end to the rumors about Alice” (Mathieu 140). The notorious bathroom stall, is one of the many ways the kids at school are using to divide her out from the rest of the school. Alice illustrated “the unending crap on the walls of the bathroom stall that I couldn’t stop reading even though I knew I should and that nobody ever bothered to clean because black Sharpie doesn’t come off so easily” (Mathieu 192). As readers of this book we depended on others to tell us most of Alice’s story. The last chapter helps gain some insight to how she’s feeling but we never definitely know, as readers we do know that she is in a miserable state because of the continual stream of
