Latinos, California’s majority, has changed Downey and other Los Angeles suburbs including Whitter, Pico Rivera, Van Nuys, and Anaheim in the past two decades. The average income has risen 3.5% between 2012 and 2013 to reach $40,963; although it is lower than white income, it is rising rapidly. Downey is nearly 75% Latino and the average household earns about $55,000 or more. Latinos in Downey try to “step it up a notch” and leave old ways to avoid disapproval from other Latinos. Since aerospace declined and white flight began in the 1990s, middle-class Latinos began to move in and embraced the change of Downey.
