Victims can become so traumatized that they begin to engage in self destructive behaviors and also self blame. In “Missoula,” Hillary McLaughlin had anxiety after almost being sexually assaulted by Beau Donaldson. In the book, she states, “ “I just had severe anxiety. I told her that I bolt, that I’m always scared, always looking over my shoulder. I mean, I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and I turn on every light in my house. If I hear one little noise, I completely freak out” (Missoula 174).” She did not know the cause of this severe anxiety until Beau Donaldson was arrested. Similar to McLaughlin, Allison Huguet who was sexually assaulted by Donaldson also experienced severe anxiety. “Huguet grew increasingly anxious, even paranoid- an aftereffect of the rape. If she entered a bathroom and the shower curtain wasn’t pulled all the way open, she would become fearful that someone was hiding behind it and she’d panic (Missoula 187).” A student named Cecilia Washburn, who is also a victim of sexual assault, blamed herself for what happened to her.
