This has caused people to no longer use the conventional ways of paying for published music and to instead, find music online and illegally download it to their electronic device for personal use. One of the biggest contributing factors to illegal downloading is technology and “technological change has sharply reduced the effective degree of protection that copyright affords” (Waldfogel 92). Producers shift away from genres of music that is constantly retrieved illegally and targets an audience with less of this problem. A difficulty the music industry has is that there is no accurate way to measure an artist’s success or amount of piracy(because it is illegal). This complication prevents producers from being easily invested in creating music and “its consequence for consumers depends on whether the supply of valuable new music dries up” (Waldfogel 92).
