Fix These Problems Slavery was one of the biggest struggles faced by the United States, tearing the country in half between those who oppose it, and those who support it. There was many conflicts about slavery back in 1860 when both these documents were written. The rights of citizens is more broad than the rights of the states as a whole.…
One of the most controversial cases in American History was the case of Dred Scott versus Sanford. Dred Scott was a slave who lived with his owner, Doctor John Emerson in the free state of Illinois. Dred Scott and his wife, Harriet, both had lived in a free state for a decade, and they decided to file for emancipation. Commonly, slaves would sue for their freedom if they had live in free territory for a long period of time. Their cases were not at first acknowledged because of the outbreak of cholera and backed up court schedules but eventually their case was heard, and the Scotts won favor.…
Slavery and Westward Expansion had a very volatile relationship in the Antebellum era America and would contribute to the American Civil War. Westward expansion and the Missouri Compromise of 1820 would be a way to preserve unity within the Union, but over the next 30 years, ties between the Northern and Southern states would be strained as more territory is gained and the question regarding slavery’s place within these new lands. Through an analysis of book and article sources, one gains the idea that Westward expansion, slavery, and the place of Africans and their rights would continue to tear away at the union until it was ripped apart when South Carolina secedes from the Union and is followed by six more states after the election of President…

First, the Dred Scott decision empowered proslavery Southerners. The 1854 Dred Scott v. Standford case was brought all the way to Supreme Court and was regarding a slave who lived in an area illegal to slavery because of the Missouri Compromise and was suing Standford for freedom (Brands 2015, 323). One event that lead to the Civil War was the Dred Scott decision. Dred Scott was a slave that moved to a free state that wanted to sue for his freedom but couldn't because he wasn't a citizen and has no rights to bring a lawsuit. The court ruled that not even voters could ban slavery because slaves are property and that would be taking someones property. The Constitution protected slavery. Another event that lead to the Civil War was the Abolitionist movement.…
The Dred Scott Decision In 1846, after about 46 years of being a slave, I awoke feeling confident and brave. Today I would do something I been thinking about doing this forever. Today I went to the Missouri State Court and I asked the court to be free, claiming that I have lived in a free state and territory. But, the court claimed I was still a slave.…
Sanford case, which would create another reason on why slavery needed to be abolished. This event happened before the start of the Civil War, so it gave the north leverage on why we needed a ratification of the Constitution. Dred Scott was a slave who moved to a state that allowed slavery, from a state that did not allow slavery. He believed that he deserved the right to be a free slave now, to not be forced into slavery just because he moved into a slaveholding state. Scott brought this point up to the United States Supreme Court because he wanted to see and receive justice.…
Imagine being born in the 1840s while slavery was happening around America. While we are imagining this also imagine that you are the black child born into this slavery and having to go through the beating and mistreatment while growing up. Later in life as an African American you must go through segregation, Jim crow laws, fugitive slave act, the civil war, the 14th and 15th amendment and lastly the black codes. Now no one wants to ever go through this as child or as an adult, but there was a person that did and his name was Allen Allensworth. Through his struggle as a young child and later as an adult he would later find a town or better known as a community that African Americans could live in peacefully.…
The ruling of the case said that no African-American had rights and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. Many of the northern states denounced the law which led to the formation of the Republican party. Historians believe that the ruling of this case was the biggest mistake that the Supreme Court ever made. If it was not for Dred Scott’s perseverance and motivation for the issue of freedom and citizenship for African - Americans the issue may have never come up. Even though Dred Scott and his family did not receive their freedom from this case, they did keep their family together through the case, which was unheard of during this time.…

Dred Scott made a huge difference as he helped start a rally to get Abraham Lincoln elected as president and give African Americans freedom. Over the years, many compromises had been made because they wanted to avoid disunion.…
