20 students were killed in the Newtown School shootings. Similarly 20 people were killed in the Salem Witch Trials. Both were senseless acts of violence that should never of happened. The difference however was the killer. In Newtown it was a single man who was mentally disabled. In Salem it was government officials. How could this have happened? The reason why she was let go is because she was having an affair with John Proctor. Abigail later in the story becomes one of the main accusers. The accusers are a group of girls who were all caught dancing in the woods one night by Parris, and now have been given the power to accuse people of witchcraft. Abigail, being the ringleader of the girls, now has been given authority in the town. She demonstrates this Authority in court when she is talking to Judge Danforth. He is questioning her about the affair and she replies with, “let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? beware of it!”(100). In this quote she clearly shows her sense of authority, and she even goes as far as to openly threat Judge Danforth. In this scene Abigail shows the authority she believes she has, but also the authority she has been given. This gives her power to put any life she wants into jeopardy, which contributes to the hysteria infecting Salem. Although Abigail remained bad there were some authoritative figures that became good. He arrives in Salem after being called by Parris. He comes to Salem with a very optimistic attitude. He is ready to use his book knowledge to save a town from the Devil. When Hale first arrives, he meets a few of the townspeople including Parris. Hale asks if Parris can carry some of his books and he does so prompting Parris to exclaim how heavy the books are. Hale replies with, “they must be; they are weighted with authority”(34). This quote represents how he sees what he is doing, but also how he has authority. In this quote we can also witness the attitude Hale comes to Salem with. He is excited and eager to start uncovering the devil 's footsteps throughout Salem.
