During her chapter, her overall goal was to focus on factories as a way of understanding the success of footballs spread throughout the country. However, as she progresses through her chapter you can see that she begins to discuss soccer as a way of upward mobility for the worker footballer. Midway through chapter one, it's stated that “Through the workers team men from humble backgrounds had access to a previously unknown cultural good which, once appropriated and reworked opened opportunities beyond pure amusement (Fontes 2014)”. This is direct evidence of the idea that working class men of all backgrounds were being treated better in the workplace, and were being hired for their skills in the sport of soccer rather than just employees. Another piece of evidence in this chapter that points to soccer as a way of upward mobility is when it's directly said that “the footballers… were awarded time off for training, given lighter work and were often promoted faster: generations of people [were given jobs] because not only did they work well, they played well (Fontes 2014 p.27).” This can be viewed as a form of upward mobility because of the fact that, one they are given better jobs and positions, and two they were often given lighter work and more time to practice and play the sport, therefore having the ability to mingle with people of various classes both politically and socially.
