The colonists of Jamestown grew tired of having to obey a distant government that did not understand their needs. Although they were content at first to merely ignore the commands of the London Company, the tension between the colonists and the royal government was steadily increasing. Sir William Berkeley, the governor appointed by England, was despised by the colonists for making his fortune off of their hard work and refusing to cooperate with them. When Indians raided a part of the colony, Berkeley refused to give the colonists permission to counterattack. This was the last straw for the infuriated colonists.
