Friendships can bloom in unexpected places. In the book The Chosen, written by Chaim Potok, four characters demonstrate how friends should treat each other. They prevail as friends with each other through not only the pleasant times, but also through the ugly challenges. Reuven and Danny, acting as side guides who are similar in age, show support for each other when the other holds his head down. Reuven often talks to Mr. Malter, his father and wise guide in life, while pouring his feelings out. Having close friends does not mean that one needs to know a person since birth. A best friendship can commence anywhere: school, doctor’s office, or even at an unpredicted event. Danny and Reuven became friends through an unfortunate, crazy baseball injury, conducting themselves like side guides. “’It’s good to have you back,’ I said. And I grinned. He smiled hesitantly, his blue eyes bright and shining. ‘You and your crazy way of hitting a baseball,’ I said” (244).
