Friendships can bloom in unexpected places. In the book The Chosen, written by Chaim Potok, four characters demonstrate how friends should treat each other. They prevail as friends with each other through not only the pleasant times, but also through the ugly challenges. Reuven and Danny, acting as side guides who are similar in age, show support for each other when the other holds his head down. This display of affection from Manya happened after Reuven came home from the hospital. Overjoyed to see him, the housekeeper demonstrated almost a motherly love towards Reuven. When his father had a heart attack, she treated him with thoughtful compassion. Although not a main character, she has a pure heart and treats Reuven as a true friend. Portraying herself as a kind person, Manya deeply cared for Reuven and Mr.
