Recent studies have shown that direct physical contact of the human body with the surface of the earth (grounding or earthing) produces profound quantifiable physiological effects. A reasonable hypothesis to explain the benefits is that a direct connection to the earth and the human body allows the abundance of free electrons to flow from the ground to the body. It is proposed that because there is sufficient evidence to suggest that earthing has positive effects on physical health, the influx of absorbed electrons by the body from the limitless and continuous supply on the earth’s surface would produce psychological benefits as well.
Previous research on changes on pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygenation, and skin conductance during and after grounding human subjects for 40 Minutes hypothesized that earthing might influence aspects of physiology (Chevalier, 2010). It was hypothesized that earthing reduces acute and chronic inflammation. It was theorized that the influx of free electrons absorbed into the body through direct contact with the earth neutralizes free radicals. The design involved indoor testing methods under controlled conditions that simulate being barefoot outdoors. Pilot studies on healthy adults were conducting where half the subjects received the experiment with a grounding cord and the other half received the control consisting of a sham cord not connected to the earth. The results indicated that the effects of earthing go beyond reducing pain and improvements in sleep, there was significant relief from asthmatic and respiratory conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, sleep apnea, hypertension, pain reduction, and reduced cortisol and blood
