On February 27, 2009 President Obama announced that combat operations in Iraq would end within 18 months. Later the removal of combat troops was scheduled to be completed by August of 2010. This plan involved decreasing troop’s levels from 142,000 and leaving a force of roughly 50,000 until the end of 2011. The group that was left behind was transitioned from combat to counter-terrorism. It was finally announced on October 21, 2011 that the remaining troops would be on their way “home for the holidays”. Initially in Afghanistan the president felt that the area was not receiving the “strategic attention, direction, and resources it urgently requires” and replaced the General Davin D. McKiernan with former Special Forces commander Lieutenant General Stanley A. McChrystal and deployed 30,000 military personnel to Afghanistan and promised to begin troop withdrawals 18 months from December 1, 2009. In February of 2013 he said the troop level would decrease from 68,000 to 34,000 within a year. Information was received in July of 2010 and with the help f the CIA they determined the general location of Osama bin Laden. The information was immediately reported to the president who rejected a plan to bomb the compound and instead authorized a surgical raid to be conducted by the Navy SEALs. This operation took place on May 1, 2011 and resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden, which of course brought about rejoice from the American citizens.
