In a recent poll performed by The Washington Post, six out of ten women declare themselves to be a feminist (Cai and Clement). In Ellen Ullman’s essay, “How to Be a ‘Woman Programmer,” she argues that women today “face a new, more virile and virulent sexism” (729). However, Saul Kaplan, author of “The Plight of Young Males,” adds to the gender inequality argument by stating, “Young men in the United States are in trouble by any measure of educational attainment” (732). It has become common today to argue about women’s inequality or focusing on solely the school’s education methods to equip future men, which we tend to overlook the deeper problems which are the results of our rapidly growing feminist culture.…
I believe this is crucial because it is rare to find institutions where they specifically teach about women rights. Nonetheless, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take liberal curriculums where gender studies is one of the majors offered for undergraduates. I believe these courses allow both males and females to be more open-minded and recognize that it is our responsibilities to constantly seek better changes. In one of my classes this year, we watched a TEDx clip of an active feminist. She said there were not enough female leaders because a lot of people still underestimate their abilities.…

Feminism is one of the very important movements going on in today’s world. People everywhere are pushing for equal rights, regardless of gender. It’s not a new thing, though. Many people, even centuries ago, pushed for women’s rights like we are now, but in different ways. One of these people was Abigail Adams, the first Second Lady and second First Lady of the newly founded United States of America.…
Rush and Murray see two benefits of female education improvement of domestic skills and improvement of raising their children but differing from rush, however, Murray also sees female education as an opportunity for independence and improvement of self for women’s education. In 1787, Dr. Benjamin Rush spoke about improving women’s education at the Young Ladies Academy located in Philadelphia, his message was centered on improving women’s education in the guise of preparing women for domestic skills and as mothers to raise their children. Later, Judith Sargent Murray’s essay “Observations of Female Abilities” (1798), which passionately described the potential beyond domestic skills that women’s education would pose by improving women’s self,…

College’s Worth Tuition, books, food, room and board are just some of the mounting expenses college students are faced with on a daily basis. The rising cost to attend college has left many questioning whether or not a college degree is really worth it. Emily Hanford, the author of the article entitled “The Value of a College Degree” writes that college is absolutely critical in order to have a successful future. She stresses that in today’s society those who do not receive college degrees are struggling to stay in the middle class. Throughout the article she uses statistics and graphs to show the growing percentage of people receiving college diplomas as well as the increasing wage gap between workers with a degree versus workers without…

The essay “Two Year Are Better than Four” was written by Liz Addison. In this essay she expressed her view that community colleges have considerable value in relationship with the universities. Moreover, she also pointed out that community colleges do not receive the appropriate consideration and acknowledgement from the academic community and, “College as America used to understand it is coming to an end” (Addison 255). In her essay, Ms. Addison advocates the significance of what community colleges offer to present students, as well as those who are interested in becoming students in the future. Ms. Addison proposed another credible point for community colleges by saying if you peel off the entitlement that accompanies a university degree,…
Many have asked, is there really a difference between community college and a four year university. The answer is, yes, of course because of the smaller classes, academics, and advantages one might receive from a community college experience. Four year colleges, on the other hand, have bigger classes, higher academic standards, and a completely different atmosphere. Community colleges offer more one on one help, because of the class sizes.…
Within the United States’ culture, racist and sexist ideologies permeate the social structure and serve as norms to such an extreme degree that they become hegemonic and seen as common and natural. From corporate institutions, to religious institutions, to academic institutions, Black women have been slighted the opportunity to be seen as equals when it comes to their counterparts. The education of African American students and women alike have been influenced by a number of institutional and social reforms. The movement from legally denying African American students the opportunity to an education; to the separate but “equal” educational system; to the integration of the American schools; these remedies attempted to afford African Americans an education and fight the pattern of injustice and discrimination. Women and Blacks can theoretically…
She urges the audience to “claim” their education by making their goals and aspirations their top priority. Here, Rich’s logic is that the future of individuals’ lives lies in their dedication to themselves and their education; thus, each individual must take a responsibility to maximize their education. This difference between “receiving” and “claiming” an education implies that individuals must resist becoming passive during their schooling, and rather be proactive to meet Rich’s conception of the future of education. Furthermore, Rich is targeting this advice toward the young women in the audience who she feels must be particularly vigilant by resisting gender stereotypes which portray women as second to men. Rich states that the audience needs to be “taking responsibility toward yourselves.…
Hannah Adams Dr. Herman Prager TX Government 14 November, 2017 College, What It Was, Is, And Should Be In Andrew Delbanco’s book, College, What It Was, Is, And Should Be, the author explains that students are no longer going to colleges to explore and discover their passions, but instead are attending just to gain an undergraduate degree. He argues that a true education helps students discover themselves. He expresses his concern that many colleges are losing their passion to help students discover themselves and their values, and those that keep up these traditions are becoming a privilege that many cannot afford.…
Feminism: For and Against Every second of everyday people make choices, they decide if they are for something or against it. Most decide to keep it to themselves but the ones who decide to voice their opinion are the ones who are persecuted the most. Feminism is a touchy subject to most people; generally males find it obsolete and women find it valuable to keep alive. There are a handful of males who are in favor of feminism and a good portion of women who are against feminism.…
