Summary: Six Types Of Elderly Abuse

Social work community day has taught me a lot about elderly abuse. I always knew that elder abuse existed, but I did not know that there were six types of elderly abuse to look out for. What I learned during social work community day is that the elderly population is growing and in the next few years there will be a lot more elders than there is now. This means more jobs for social workers and a lot more nursing homes. The six different types of elderly abuse from what I learned on social work community day are physical, emotional, psychological, neglect, fraud, and scams. Elder abuse does not just happen in nursing homes, but it does also happen in the homes of their family members. One type of elder abuse that really stood out to me was fraud abuse. According to Kirst-Ashman (2014) the social exchange theory is “the interactions between and among individuals” (Kirst-Ashman, 2014, p. 81). The interaction is very important between an elderly person and others. Elder abuse could easily impact the health of the elder and even cause them to pass away quicker depending how badly they were abused. When the person becomes older they could lose their hearing, eyesight, unable to walk or are very ill, and due to these factors the elders rely on others to help them with their everyday needs. Elders reach out for help to those they could trust and once they lose that trust due to the other person stealing or neglect this is going to cause the elderly to isolate themselves and have major depression disorders. Elderly abuse should be taught more and raise more awareness in order to stop this abuse. Most people when they hear abuse they think of children or adults rarely the majority will think of elderly
