Should college student athletes get paid to Play?
For quite some time now, there has been a big debate about whether or not college athletes should get paid. Some people believe that a scholarship should be payment enough. After all, a scholarship can be easily worth $15,000 - $25,000 or more per year, plus a career after college that can be worth a million dollars over a lifetime. Additionally, student athletes receive all kinds of perks and benefits while they are in college, like staying at fancy hotels, being seen on national television and all of the notoriety that goes with being a star athlete. College athletes are a lot like professionals athletes, so why can't they get paid? After all they are televised, they do travel like professionals do. The only difference is that professionals get paid and college athletes don’t. This should that a college athlete puts more time into training in their sports and games more than a typical American worker. With this evidence, how do students take time to study for their classes? Athletes in some sports are spending more time in uniform than they are attending classes and studying. In fact Division I baseball players Baseball, which has the longest season of any collegiate sport, devote 42.1 hours a week to the sport during their season, which is 10.4 hours more than they spend on academics. A lot of Universities are even known for certain sports teams. For example Alabama is known to be the number one football team, Clemson is known to have the number one soccer team, and Villanova is known to have one of the best records for a college basketball team. Without the players hard work and determination, Colleges would not be known for anything. How hard these college athletes work they deserve to get paid for their hard work and dedication. Considering how much money the players bring in for these colleges they need to get some kind of cut, keeping in mind that they are the ones putting in the work. For Instance, according to, College coaches get paid, why not the athletes if their the ones that have to take more time out to make themselves grow athletically so they continue to keep their spot on this team. College can be very stressful and these athletes do have to get an education along with find time to study, see family, enjoy life with friends, practice, and travel to play games. There is only 24 hours in a day and only 7 days a week, how will they even have time to bathe? Taking into consideration all of the money these athletes bring in to their schools for programs and credibility they deserve something in return for their hard
