These guidelines are the foundation for group communication and participation within the discourse community. I have conducted some research comprised of an interview and an observation on Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), a pre-health honors society located here at the University of Miami, that is known for their guest speakers and shadow opportunities that they provide for their members…
Teaching Assistant Application Design is powerful, creative and often surprising. As a teaching assistant, I would like to have an interactive classroom, whether that interaction is between lecturer and the students, or between the students themselves. I believe that lecturing should not be a one-way communication system. As a graduate student, I think it is more important that the students are constantly a part of the process of their own learning.…
Twenty five strangers sit in a room together with the purpose of learning a difficult subject. Is the best way to do this with a lecture? There is a problem with communication in college. Every student learns differently, but research has shown that when students are more involved and participate grades are remarkably better. To some professors warming up the classroom is seen as time wasting others.…
These routines and procedures are designed around the idea to give students accountability for their responsibilities in and out of the classroom. They are explained, modeled, and then reinforced to assure students understand them all. The Danielson Framework for managing classroom procedures states that students are taking initiative, are minimally prompted by the teacher, and that the overall instruction time is maximized by the classroom running smoothly. Wong & Wong (2014) is closely aligned to the framework because they emphasize the need of procedures for an efficient and orderly classroom to ensure learning. These procedures are student focused so students learn that they play a vital role in the classroom and are also in charge of their education.…
Throughout this Spring Semester we discussed many different social justice issues all completely different, but none the less important. Our class adapted a learning through discussion type of approach; rather than being lectured for three hours we all discussed different topics, had debates, asked questions, stated our opinions on controversial topics, etc. The class was intriguing making it one of my favorite classes to go to. A couple of the topics we discussed were human and sex trafficking, the difference between internalized dominance versus internalizing oppression, discrimination and racism. Human and sex trafficking are not something a lot of people know or hear much about besides what they see on law and order or CSI: Miami.…
Introduction of the Second Subject: Hockey Coach The next topic, which will be related to an individual, is motivational theories. The individual was my hockey coach for numerous years. The role of a hockey coach is very interesting, especially at a younger age similar to this coach. The role of the coach does not revolve around winning and training, but more involving teaching players to become better teammates and overall individuals.…
Season 3, episode 14 of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, entitled “Rules of Engagement,” has led me to a new understanding about the choice to have Amy and Ricky break up in the series finale episode. The word engagement comes up in the relationships between Amy and Ricky, Ben and Adrian, and Anne and George, Amy’s parents. The latter of the three couples, however, ends their engagement to be remarried, while the two former have just begun a courtship that leads them to become engaged. Nevertheless, these two relationships also end after the couples realize that they are not in love and only got married because they thought that they were in love but were really remedying an unplanned pregnancy. These two couples parallel the four…
As a Neumann University Psychology major I have grown to be part of a community. I have learned to make friends, and go outside of my comfort zone. As a student I have become more confident with the work I turn in. With teachers that have helped grow as a student, but as a member of a Franciscan valued community. I feel more comfortable with interacting with many different people.…
My Final Reflection This semester during Introduction to Group Communication, I have learned so much that I will be able to take with me throughout my life and career. There are a number of topics that I have found to be crucial in interacting with people on a professional level. There have also been a number of topics that I will be able to practice in my personal life at home, as a wife and mother.…
Then, the teachers will join together for an educational class meeting. In their class meeting, they will collaborate and offer ideas to one another on ways to use the class meetings strategy within their class. The ideas range from class lessons, current world events, upcoming school events, school activities, etc. As the break-out sessions come to an end, all three groups will join back together for lunch before resuming for the keynote…
Collaboration is the key component to many successful organizations, teams, and practices in our world. Creating a collaborative culture can be defined in many ways. Collaborative cultures are created with a set of goals, managed efficiently, and support team members at every stage in the process. As Senge (2008) stated, the creation is difficult, takes courage, and a lot of patience. A collaborative culture is created upon essential foundations including a shared vision, diverse thinking, innovation, and support.…
The team simulation exercise allowed the team to practice our collaboration skills and emotional intelligence. During the past two days, I have had the opportunity to learn a great deal about myself as a leader and team member and observe others’ behaviors and how they influence the team’s dynamic and effectiveness. As a result, there were many lessons gained that helped to guide the learning environment. To begin, I exhibited what is categorized as self-limiting behavior during the first day due to my lack of comfort with the simulation exercise and my lack of familiarity with marketing.…
The Importance of Group Dynamic Working back to back twelve hour shifts can be stressful and tiresome. Having to work with the same people over and over again can be bothersome as well. The hospital employees are always working throughout the day and night every holiday as well. You may not realize how much of their time goes to their job and some of the workers that I know including my mother wouldn’t trade it for the world. “In the healthcare setting, particularly the hospital setting, individual contributors are members of numerous groups.…
In this course, we learned many beneficial lessons and information by examining individuals, groups and organization from the behavioral and structural point of view. We learned about employee motivation and satisfaction, communication, power and politics, the dynamics of groups and teams, conflict management, and organization design and change. I believe with this knowledge about these topic, I will look the work environment at a different perspective. I believe this knowledge has given me the tools to understand how an organization works no matter what the field of the business it is focused in. Also, working with individuals, it will be easier to spot deficiencies in group settings and possibly fix them right away.…
Group discussion will allow learner to offer a contribution in a manner that they feel less threatening to their self-esteem than having to speak in front of the teacher or the class. By utilizing group discussion, learners can correct their misunderstandings by discussing and finally came out with the most sensible answer as the outcome of the…
