The inmate was serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. His story really stuck out to me and prompted me to stick with a similar topic to assignment number three. This mans story enlightened me to the issues of overcrowding and the privatization of America’s prisons. I began to read article after article about how much people were profiting off the amount of heads they could fit inside of their poorly kept private prisons. It’s almost sickening to know that someone out there in the world is making billions of dollars off of the misery of another man. As I completed more research I found that the private prison industry was a direct result of overcrowding. Federal prisons are so crowded that the government started pushing legislation and money into private prisons contracted by third party companies. I found most of this information on financial websites and from nationally recognized newspapers. Most of the sources were secondary sources that took the form of a report. All of my sources had substantial statistical evidence to back up the claims each article made. This is where I came up with the idea to have a “Know Your Facts” column on the side of my written article. I think that my project challenged readers to consider their place in society. Obviously federal prison is not a common theme of place on a college campus but the meaning of this piece is to go beyond the obvious. I want the article and video to show viewers that they can be apart of something more then themselves. They can be politically active and have a say in the direction that this country is headed. College is not only a place where you find yourself, but also a place where you establish where you will end up. This project is just one little step to finding out just where that may
