The debate continues on the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. The truth is, the legalization of marijuana is good for Washington’s economy. If you look back in history, a variation of it was grown during colonial times to be used in making rope, paper, sails and fabric. On the other hand, during Harry J. Anslinger’s time as commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics during the 1930’s, he created wild stories to discourage the use of marijuana. In order to instill fear, he claimed that people that had used marijuana were killing their families.…

In New York City, where the strategy was born and still remains common today, police made only 800 Marijuana arrests in 1991, compared to nearly 60,000 arrests made less than 20 years later. In 2014 alone, United States law enforcement officers made over 700,000 arrests solely on Marijuana-related charges, according to data released by the FBI. 620,000 of those arrests were made for Marijuana possession alone.…

The Long-Term Issues with Legalizing Recreational Marijuana The major issue with legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in California, or any other state, is the harm it can do to one’s mental health, the way it takes away a person’s capacity to carry out daily tasks productively, and finally how all people, including children will be exposed to it in public, even if they are against it. Medical marijuana that is used by people with serious health conditions should not be made illegal, but should also not be easily accessible to the general public, but only for those who truly need it, such as cancer patients. However medical marijuana has been proven effective in helping to relieve pain in patients with serious health issues who truly need it. The use of recreational marijuana should not be legalized in any state due…

Marijuana is not something new to the American government, it has been an ongoing battle to control the seemingly harmless plant that the government deemed illegal with no justification other than we still do not know enough about the plant. It is only due to recent theories of marijuana ability to be used as a useful medicine that people have began to rise up and ask why we have been denied access to plant that has no proven health risks. This movement is not moving slowly either with twenty-three states already legalizing medical marijuana with four of them legalizing…

Marijuana has, compared to other both legal and illegal drugs, low effects on the human body. “No death from marijuana overdose has ever been reported and the ill effects of alcohol, nicotine, and prescription painkillers (...) vastly overweight those of marijuana” ( Ingraham, Janet. “Lee, Martin A. Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana--Medical, Recreational, and Scientific”). Research has also shown that marijuana “ use does not lead to physical dependence, and there are no withdrawal symptoms when the drug is not discontinued” (“drug use” Britannica School. Encyclopaedia Britannica).…
