Throughout history there seem to be events that create a culture for everyone who comes after and gives that culture meaning and embeds it into the people who it affects. One of these events happened to the Pachuca/os, or zoot suiters, who were a subculture that emerged among Mexican American youth in the 1940s, characterized by their distinctive style of dress, which included oversized suits, long watch chains, and flamboyant accessories. During World War II, tensions between white sailors and minority communities, including Chicanas/os, Latinas/os, and African Americans, escalated in cities like Los Angeles, leading to the infamous White Sailor riots. These riots were fueled by a combination of racial prejudice, social tensions, and economic disparities. In this video one of their speakers states that “This is a period of Segregation, at the heart of segregation if your racialized as a minority your supposed to stay in your own corner” (Pagan, Eduardo). In this video they give a long account of everything that would have led to the Zoot Suit riots, talking about how the way the Pachucas/os dressed and the biases the newspaper represented in the stories they told, and even how the police seemed to be looking for any reason to prove that there was a Mexican crime wave happening, seeming to find it when a young man by the name of Jose Diez was killed, and the police arresting hundreds of Pachucos in response to this and charging several of them with the crimes for his death, which were a later overturned.
