In the short story “Your Move” by Eve Bunting the main character James is very irresponsible. Even though he shows positive characteristics such as being protective of his brother, he can be easily influenced, self-conscious, and most of all unintelligent.

He is easily influenced because to get into a “club” he had to climb a super high sign and risked his life to do so. The “club” leaders (Kris + Bones) told him that when you're on the sign write K-BONES over the SNAKES symbol in spray paint. They told him to vandalize the sign and he did it. The “club” leaders told him to meet them and the other members behind Rosettes Pizza Palace at night, but even though he was supposed to watch his brother when his mom was at work he went. This is why he is easily influenced.

He vandalized a sign and risked his life by climbing up a humongously tall pole. As he is up there he sprays the sign and he shimmies down the pole. When he gets down he faces his crying brother saying “I thought you were gonna die” but instead of saying it's all right or don't cry, he said “Naw”.
