Throughout the speech The duties of American Citizenship, by Theodore Roosevelt, and the article What is an American?, by Edward L. Hudgins, the traits and values of being an American were explained. In most people’s eyes, an American is someone who lives in the U.S, but it can include more than just those. Most values and traits of Americans were agreed upon between these two articles such as hard work, freedom, strength, and courage. An American is described as “Anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it has to offer.” (Hudgins 1) An American is someone who works hard and has good work ethics. “Fortune did not fall into my grandpop’s hands. He had traveled to America several times before 1930 to find work, establish himself, and make it possible to bring over the family.” (Hudgins 1) This is one of many examples of the hard work Americans do to be successful in their lives. Americans don't just wait for a miracle like winning the lottery, they go out and work hard to earn what the get. “But let me reiterate, that in being virtuous he must not become ineffective, and that he must not excuse himself for shirking his duties by any false plea…”(Roosevelt 5) Americans must be strong and should not do the bare minimum because they are scared of failing. The courage it takes to make an important decision should be in each and every American. “An American is anyone who understands that to achieve the best in life requires action, exertion, effort.” (Hudgins 1) Americans must be prepared to face the tough challenges that lie ahead of them. They don’t go through life being scared to do what is necessary. They must gather the courage and have the strength to conquer
