The political journey of Shirley Chisholm is one that expanded the political dynamics to unaccounted groups of people. Chisholm was the first black women elected to Congress, a mighty feat of its own, came with campaign challenges that pushed her to the brink. Ultimately running for the Democratic nomination for the presidency, Chisholm proved that a political machine could be disrupted in the roots of its voters. Being a woman, Chisholm did not let this issue define her congressional campaign or her Democratic nomination campaign, rather attacking the political corruption and elevating the needs of the black population, at a time of significant growth. Her motto “unbought and unbossed” became her rallying slogan because she is neither for…
On July 4, 1776, colonists risked their lives and the lives of their future generations to fight the most powerful nation at the time, Great Britain. The period around 1960’s America was known as the Civil Rights Movement where African Americans risked their lives and self-respect facing ideologies that had no moral or ethical grounds. What these two events have in common is that people gathered together to fight for the right to participate in their system of governance: to participate in a democracy. What does it mean to participate in a democracy if people are willing to lose their lives over the right to do so?…
Introduction Mary McLeod Bethune’s My Last Will and Testament reflects on a lifetime of educational research and activism. She wrote this as a beacon for the advancement of negro men and women. She had few possessions to leave when she passed, but had a wealth of experiences she could share with others. Ideas About Higher Education Bethune views higher education from a holistic approach with a focus on the developmental aspect on both the individual and group levels. In the article she states, “As long as Negroes are hemmed into racial blocs by prejudice and pressure, it will be necessary for them to band together for economic betterment” (Bethune, 1992, p. 110).…
She explains the fact that she believes she deserves the right to equality just like every other African American woman would like to as well. With her consistently states the same rhetorical question to build more and more of the emotion into her audience as if they could feel the discrimination onto them and how they would like to be free from the burden that others bring onto them. As she stated her rhetorical question to her audience she changes tones and the volume of her speech so that her audience understands her passion and dedication to the rights of others and how seriously it should be taken…
In Bradley’s speech, I Want You to Know What They Did to My Boy, Bradley can be seen addressing the situated audience’s characteristics of being opposed to segregation, unbiased to the African-American perspective and willing to be informed while cultivating being a parent, being used by the American justice system because of color, and the empathy of losing a loved one as characteristics of Bradley’s imagined audience. Throughout the entirety of Bradley’s speech, she attempts to address her audience, which is widely composed of people disagreeing strongly that segregation has been approached throughout the Civil Rights movement because of their willingness to participate in an NAACP rally. As Bradley states, “We’re not trying to start a race…
Civil society is a contested and developed theory studied by various scholars across the globe. Based on intense research conducted to define this social construct, the high level of complexity and difficulty to understand is evident. Philosophers Brian O’Connell (1999) and Bruce Sievers (2010), publicized their developed understanding of what constitutes civil society and the essential elements required to sustain the conditions of civil society. In exploring their work, both authors agree the relationship between the nonprofit sector and civil society promotes democracy, which is enhanced by its institutional structures and normative ideals. The most important institutional structure, system of free expression, is defined as a “definitive…
She said she, “I felt proud and sad at the same time. Proud that I lived in a country that would go this far to bring justice to a Little Rock girl like me, but sad that they had to go to such great lengths.” (Beals) She knows how important this breakthrough of, “the color line” was. But, it was all just too much.…
How democratic is America? It’s a question which seems simple, but when we examine it, it becomes a much more complex problem. People often define democracy in different ways. Howard Zinn and Sidney Hook, both famous historians, are two of those who define it quite differently. Howard Zinn chooses to define it as a set of criteria that examine the quality of life of our citizens, whether that is access to information, or equal pay.…
In the first chapter of William E. Hudson’s book American Democracy in Peril, Hudson discusses the reasoning and application of the separation of powers stemmed from the Constitution, and the impact it has had as well as the failures that came as a consequence of it. Due to the changing meaning of the Jeffersonian model, one of the failures Hudson argues is that the separation of powers in a partisan, party-based system falls apart once both parties are to blame. It is also argued that the same system creates a political minority “biased against change” to protect against the supposed tyranny of the majority. Hudson ends by making a case in favor of a change in government towards the form of a parliament for the sake of accountability and protection…

It has been established by our Founding Fathers that the nation is to run on a government in which the power of the officials is limited and subject to the say of the people. A guarantee of this principle is the form of government in which America holds today. Although the system is seemingly ideal, it can develop deep cracks that root to problems and controversy over power and constitutionality. The operations of interest groups, political parties, and election campaigns play large factors into whether or not this form of government succeeds or fails. These are the stems that connect the work of the government to the people and how citizens contribute to policy and are fueled by the standards of democracy.…
What is freedom? Is it the right to vote, the right to express your own opinions, the right to live your live as you please? In American Politics and the African American Quest for Universal Freedom written by Hanes Walton Jr., and Robert C. Smith, they answer and discuss these questions as they pertain to African Americans today. They explain how challenging the journey of freedom was and still is, “given their status first as slaves and then as an oppressed racial minority,” (Walton, 92). The book not only highlights African Americans usage of coalitions, interest groups and the media throughout the centuries to support their natural right of freedom, sometimes without prevail.…
She had no clue that the reason why African Americans have the same rights as white people now was partly because of…
It is a generally accepted fact that the people love the soil they are born on. However, in oppressed dictatorships and tyranny rules , the people who once had faith in their homeland may become emotionally depressed and start cursing their fate of being born in that particular country. Thus, these forms of governments can greatly have an adverse effect on one’s devotion to his birthplace which gives way to little or no patriotism. On the other hand, in a democratic form of government, everyone has their say in the leadership and they have access to human rights. Thus, this equity in the society together with the love of homeland creates such patriotism that is not apparent in any other forms of government.…

Especially in a diverse society which is a combination of different types of people in which there is a variety of races, cultures, physical appearances, skin colours, differences in opinions, differences in their belief systems or religion, etc. To understand the true meaning of the word ‘democratic citizenship’, it is also important to be able to understand the word ‘citizen’ in the first place. Referring to a research from a dictionary website on the internet, I would define the word ‘citizen’ as a native or naturalised member of a state, a nation, or a particular…
