According to the website “Welcome to Puerto Rico” by Magaly Rivera (1995), Columbus was the original founder of the island in November of 1493 in which he brought 17 ships and around 1,500 men to colonize the island. The Spanish colonization gives reason to the deep roots of Spanish language and culture on the island. Rivera also states that much of the islands early history surrounded the natural ports and trading that were used on the island.
