Gwendolyn Brooks, a female black author. She had written many poems, but to everyone there is one that sticks out the most.“We Real Cool.” She wishes that wasn 't the only poem that she is well-known for but that will do for her. Her poem is very short yet it is good enough to set an image and makes someone think about what era this was at and how it can trigger something. It is based on of the young adults and what they do as an everyday life instead of what they should be doing to better their lives. She doesn 't speak in a way where it would seem like she 's disowning them, she speaks in a way where she wonders why they do what they do. In the poem, there is a bunch of imagery. “Sin" was implying a moral and criminal wrongdoing. We know that these boys are from the streets so they do criminal like things when she says they “lurk late” at night. “Gin” which is alcohol, implies that these young boys are heavy drinkers. It may not be the case in reality, but reading it seems like it is saying just that. “Thin” could mean that it possibly became intoxicating for the young boys. The tone of the poem is unpleasant and intensifies dramatically towards the end of the poem, “We die soon.” This line alone is supposed to give you a chilling feeling and firmly cement their future. To go more into detail with an overview of the poem, seven is usually represented as a lucky number. The “golden” represents happiness, how the boys are feeling. Unfortunately, the word “shovel” signifies death. Ms. Brooks basically says that people who acted street like were soon to …show more content…
There are many young boys, and now even girls, who skip school. Soon enough, they also become dropouts. Not only is it these african american people, it had expanded and now it is hispanics, whites, asian and so on. Like in her poem, it isn 't only young people from her time, but from the twenty-first century as well. Every year there are younger kids dropping out of school because they don 't have the motivation for it or they rather hang out with friends whenever they want. How is that supposed to pay their bills? Ms. Brooks wrote a poem that we can possibly relate to for the next few years or even centuries to come. She had written such a short, straight to the point poem in only eight lines. She emphasized on education without really saying many words. It has a catchy tune when you read it and yet you would still able to understand that there is no alternative ending for these young men. Death will follow them throughout their lives, they just have to figure out how exactly they want to live theres. Whether they decide to continue with school or be a drop out and hustle on the streets for survival is their

Smith does this by saying the names of specific civil rights activist who really made an impact to society such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X. Due to this, the Black Kid in the class feels like there is a bar of expectation where he needs to know everything about his history. For this alternative assignment, I listened to an assortment of poetry by Warsan Shire. I chose her for this assignment because of her subject matter and style. For most of her poetry, Shire speaks about love and what it means to be a woman in today’s world; in addition to, social problems such as the topic of refugees. As a fellow writer, I feel inspired by what she is accomplishing in the literary world. She uses her voice as an African American to give her poetry a specific flavor that speaks of the black experience.…
