Water for Elephants is a historical novel that was written by Sara Gruen.it was the beginning of the Great Depression. For Americans suffering through the worst serious money-based problem the country had ever gone through - with little money and food to go around - attending a circus performance would have seemed like an amazing, (very much/in an upset, hopeless way) needed an escape. Going to the circus would have been a (wished very much)-for, much-appreciated break for those who could afford the tickets. Think about it. These people didn't have TVs. They had little entertainment and no travel budgets. Plus, they had to wait for the circus to come to them -they couldn't travel to see it. It was written as part of National Novel Writing Month. …show more content…
The unusual title comes from an event at the beginning of the novel. Jacob makes fun of another resident at the nursing home who claims to have worked in the circus and carried water for the elephants. The circus train only carried a limited amount of water on board and elephants will drink at least twenty-six to eight gallons a day. In a later (scene or a sudden mental picture where earlier events are shown or remembered) to Jacob's younger years, Jacob is brought to Uncle Al, the manager of the circus, who teases in a mean way him with, "You want to carry water for the elephants, I suppose?"This novel won some awards and was nominated for a Quill Award for general fiction. It was a New York Times best-seller for twelve weeks in

In Sara Gruen’s “Water for Elephants”, due to his single-minded desire for Marlena, Jacob achieves beyond what might have seemed possible for him. He committed adultery, attempted to kill August in an act to protect Marlena and even bought back the animals and went back to veterinary school, to make her happy. Upon meeting Marlena, Jacob’s core morals such as integrity remained the same, although he developed traits such as bravery, compassion and ambition. Jacob committed an act that most would describe unthinkable. He himself might have thought the same if not for the circumstances.…

The comical personalities all the characters had helped the audience become more intrigued in the story of this play. From this play, I liked that there was only one actor for each character. Water for Elephants By; Chasity Laporte Water for Elephants was published in 2006, and was banned in Bedford, N.H. School District (2010) after a parent complained about the book's sexual content, violence but still an amazing story in my own opinion. This book is an epic love story between a man named Jacob Jankowski, woman named Marlena, and Marlena's husband August who is a cruel man, and a beautiful elephants named Rosie, but why would such a amazing book be banned? I ask the same question. The sexule content between Marlena, and Jacob is pretty wild. The first kiss between Marlena and Jacob is reminiscent of the scene when the two of them dance in front of Rosie.…

After reading Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, I have decided to give it 4.5 out of five stars. Although this novel contains a lot of death and tragedy, it offers the reader a look into The Great Depression and how it affected the people living during that time period. One of the novel’s strengths was the way the author was able to almost effortlessly switch between past and present without confusing the reader. Gruen made sure to incorporate both ninety-three-year-old Jacob and twenty-year-old Jacob equally in a way so his background supported and enhanced his current story. Another strength was how historically accurate the book is.…

Humans have the great ability to mediate any of their own actions, which in turn allows them to think greatly about how they act and treat others, while formulating an internal debate of whether their actions are commendable or poor. Introspection is an imperative for humans to have the proper view and respect for other individuals, including those of a different species. It allows us to look at our actions towards others and trade places with others to see if how it would feel to be in their place using our own feelings and experience. If in a conflict, then this method can justify whether or not a correct decision was made so that it would not negatively one’s self or another. We lose some of our values because we start valuing the values of others in our peer group, just to fit in. Everyone deals with their values differently. Both stories are more different than similar , where one character gives up his value to support another value while the other character gives up everything to maintain his values. “Shooting the elephant” depicts the story of a young officer who has to decide whether to follow his own path or the path that the majority wants him to follow.…

Well, a half a dozen made a jump to do it, but somebody sings out, ‘ Let him pass the hat around!’ Then everybody said it, the preacher too” ( Twain 132). Also, the crowd were hypocritical in their belief. This can be seen when the crowd wants to kill Sherburn for killing a drunk man but also enjoy the suffering of the drunken man at the circus. An example of this is when Huck says, “ the drunk men hanging on to his neck, and his heels flying in the air every jump, and the whole crowd of people standing up shouting and laughing till tears rolled down” ( Twain…

London during the late 1800s to early 1900s was also very diverse in the people who lived there, which is important to the story because the performers in the circus all originate from different places but are able to call London, and the circus, their home. The setting is so effective in supporting the ideas in the novel as a whole because this is where the major conflict in the story is started and resolved, with it being the competition between Celia and Marco and how it could potentially put their friends in harm’s way. The story is best told in this setting because as the connection between Marco and Celia grows, so does the circus. The two keep coming up with and creating attractions that are gifts for each other. An example of this is when…
