Summary of Volunteering According to a website titled, “Certification Map”, the necessary preparation and requirements to become a certified teacher in the state of Arizona is to acquire “the completion of an accredited teacher education program.” Field experience is significant in becoming a teacher so that they may gain first-hand learning experience in the teaching field. It is required that new coming teachers receive at least a bachelor’s degree in the education field. Before I began working as teachers assistant I was studying business. After a semester of working in the classroom I was inspired to change my major to Elementary Education. I have a great relationship with my coworkers. I enjoy working side-by-side with people who love our students and dedicate themselves to help each student improve. I have received a lot of positive feedback from my coworkers about my work ethic and I’ve been complimented on the initiative I’ve taken in being a team leader. I’ve noticed my coworkers look to me for direction, although none of us hold a higher position than the other. Every day is different, but we work as a team. When new challenges arise, we work together to solve the issue. Where one lacks, the other makes up. One of my biggest observations is that communication is super important. After learning about these philosophies, I understand a bit more of what my teaching philosophy may fall under. Based on these teaching philosophies, I’ve realized my teaching philosophy will incorporate nearly all of them. However, I would incorporate some more than others. Like essentialism, for example. According Parkway, essentialism is described as “common knowledge”. Essentialists believe that this common knowledge should be passed through generations and it is an important part of the learning curriculum. I agree with this philosophy because I believe, in order to improve the future, we must first learn from our past. This is just one philosophy I will incorporate. Another philosophy I will incorporate is Progressivism, which is the belief that learning should be centered on the child. Working as a teacher’s assistant, has enhanced my belief on this philosophy. Each child I work with is different and unique; sometimes we have to be considerate of the potential of each student. Some can do more than others. Although I don’t believe these children deserve preferential treatment because of their inability, it is still important to be considerate, all whilst holding them to high expectation. As the saying goes, “If you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”-Albert Einstein. One of my biggest weaknesses is being too lenient.
