“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” This quote is from famous Dutch painter Vincent Willem van Gogh. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands to Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. He was named for his grandfather Vincent, who was also named for his uncle, a successful sculptor, also named Vincent Van Gogh. Unfortunately, van Gogh like many artists did not become famous for his artwork until after he died. Van Gogh was the oldest surviving child of his parents, he was born exactly one year after his older brother, who was stillborn and named Vincent as well. He was persuaded to attend the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts by his brother Theo and prominent Dutch artist Willem Roelofs. One year later, he moved to the countryside with his parents. This is where he would fall in love with his older, recently widowed, cousin Kee Vos Stricker. She was repulsed with him and abruptly left for her parents’ home in Amsterdam. Van Gogh was irate and inconsolable, he moved back to The Hague later that year. There he fell for an alcoholic prostitute who would become his mistress and model, but when she leaves to return to prostitution he became depressed. During his stay here van Gogh created his most famous piece of work, The Starry Night, as well as his series of paintings of cypress trees which he saw on his supervised walks he was allowed. In January of 1890 van Gogh moved to Auvers so that he may be treated by Dr. Paul Gachet, who van Gogh criticized saying “…sicker than I am, I think, or shall we say just as much.” Months later on July 27, 1890, van Gogh attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. His attempt was unsuccessful, as he did not die instantly; he lived for another two days. He died on July 29, 1890 at the age of thirty-seven in his brothers arms. Theo died six months later in a Dutch asylum from complications of syphilis.
Johanna van Gogh, the widow of Theo van Gogh attempted to collect as many of his paintings as she could. She was not able to retrieve and save all of his works, his mother is said to have thrown out crates of paintings. After a show of his work in Paris in 1901, van Gogh’s fame grew. He is now considered one of the greatest artists of Dutch descent, second only to Rembrandt.
