Nic’s addiction isn’t only bad for his health it’s also bad in a financial perspective. In the beginning of the novel Nic puts his addiction above most things including himself. Nic sold himself to males in exchange for drugs which later fills him with regret and misery. At points in the novel Nic rather have nothing than not have drugs. He writes, “We call our dealer...we buy lots of cocaine and crystal and some pills. We’re basically out of money. I’m not sure how we’re going to pay rent, or eat, or anything” (Sheff 271). In other words, Nic and Zelda want the drugs even if they have no idea how they’ll manage the rest of their expenses. They're being reckless and putting their life on the line in exchange for drugs. Like in the beginning of the novel, Nic had $3,000 dollars saved from when he was sober but he quickly lost that and that was all he was relying on. Nic and Zelda relied on Zelda's money however Zelda then stopped working to continue to get high. Zelda’s money too, was used up and they then had to rely on selling her clothes and personal items.
