A tragic event occurred at 10PM on Saturday night. Jeremy and Jean-Louise Finch were attacked by Mr. Bob Ewell. This occurred after the pageant at the local high school earlier in the evening, in which Scout played the ham. Mr. Arthur Radley saved the children and from Mr. Ewell with the very knife Mr. Ewell intended to use to kill the children. Before the attack, all seemed normal in the town to most of its inhabitants. This Halloween celebrated the fruit of Mrs. Merriweather’s brilliant mind. Mrs. Merriweather began a tradition that surely will recur- a pageant where many students dress up in costumes made by volunteers. It celebrates Maycomb’s extensive and wonderful culture and history. For more about the pageant, reporter Grace McGovern has more in her report. The events of the attack are not entirely clear. The only real testimony available is of Jean Finch, or Scout, as she prefers to be called. According to her testimony, she and Jeremy, or Jem as she calls him, left the pageant about a half hour after it ended. Scout had no shoes, and she could feel the roots of the trees, and could feel the ground. Jem had correctly informed her that ground under a tree is cooler than ground farther away from the tree. As the trees blocked their view, they could not see Mr. Ewell creeping up on them. He grabbed Jem and threw him to the ground, breaking his arm and leaving him unconscious. Then, he attempted to stab Scout with his knife. Thankfully, the the chicken wire which gave the ham its shape, prevented the blade from injuring her. The chicken wire did, however, leave puncture wounds in Mr. Ewell’s abdomen area. He fell backwards, and his knife penetrated his side through his ribs, killing him.
