The unnamed narrator mentions, “I brush the snow...The vinyl seats are cold...They are smooth and easy clean. The lug wrench is where it has always been...I heft it, put it back,” (Pancake 83). The syntax in this paragraph was often short, meaning the sentences were meant to be straightforward, not extremely descriptive but descriptive enough. It is of significance due to the reason if it being straightforward, he doesn’t reveal much, however, makes the reader question why he mentioned the cold vinyl seats and a lug wrench in such form. The author lays his third clue similar to the first to draw the reader in and question the content when he mentions how the narrator doesn’t socialize with his coworkers, he seems more of an isolated person than normal.
On this third clue, the narrator mentions Mr. Weeks, his coworker, “But we are not friends. We don't come around each other at all. I don't even know if he’s got family” (Pancake, 84). This being the second clue it exposes the reader how the narrator is as a character, he has no one in his life, his wife died and his son is nowhere to be found. The significance of this clue is the new information on how the narrator is as a person, a lonely man. This draws the reader in also because it causes to question why is he purposely lonely and why he doesn’t talk to Mr.
