In February I was given the opportunity to attend a wonderful lecture from LeVar Burton titled “The Value of Diversity”. I was very excited about this lecture as I remember Mr. Burton being a big part of my childhood as he hosted “Reading Rainbow” and had a recurring role on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” As it turns out, he is every bit as kind and passionate as I had hoped. He began the lecture by talking about his mother; the woman who inspired and encouraged his love for reading, learning, and creativity. He explained that his mother worked, pursued a master’s degree, and cared for her three children all on her own, but still managed to make time for reading with her children every day.
