“Up on Melancholy Hill” by the band Gorillaz is a song from their album “Plastic Beach”, which uses the extended metaphor of a beach formed by trash and plastic that has been collecting on the sea. This song takes place on the island, with two lovers looking out towards the titular Melancholy Hill, with the singer speaking to her. It uses this to make a statement about consumerism, and more specifically how many people try to fill a void inside themselves with consumerism, but can never truly succeed, instead only killing the natural world in their pursuit. The song is titled control because, the singer mentioned that she has bipolar disorder, and she feels the constant confusion and frustration of who is actually controlling her state of mind. In the song many things symbolize her state of mind, and how she sees it, which would be like a “deadly disease”. The important symbol that is used in this song is “I’m bigger than my body, I’m colder than this home”, meaning that she see’s herself as something that is much better than what her body represents or shows, while the other part symbolizes how her other persona can be mean or cold to people.…

The track sings that you'll be labeled by the actions you chose to take in your earlier times, and that it will be hard to gain yourself back, but you should always have some hope to try and fix what went wrong. James conveys this idea with the lyric “Coz a one in a million chances… still a chance, still a chance… and I would take those odds.” This connects that a very slim chance is still a strand of hope and that anyone should be willing to take any risk just to try and fix things. Most tend to give up after assuming that a moment is over. Listening to this song inspires you to realize that taking that small chance of hope, may end up saving your life.…
