For last Friday's lecture from Annette Vargas, her lecture from last Friday talked about clinic design, which is the background scenes within a movie or play. which is really all of the scenery, and the furniture that you see within a set design. She also talks about how the design process works with designing a stage. When she shows us step by set instructions on how she design the show Die Fledermaus set design. so, she broke each step down from how much money she could spend on the production design to what the floor would look like. Overall, I thought that her lecture was very fascinating from the point that I have never been really interested in theater. But, from this lecture I have become more fascinated with how they do design stages.

Imagine being given the opportunity to fill in the role of a brilliant and famous actor such as Audrey Hepburn. Fortunately for past Disney star Vanessa Hudgens, this dream of starring in a Broadway show has become a reality. This past week I had the privilege to go to New York and see the Broadway revival of Gigi. Gigi is originally based on the novella titled Gigi by Collete. The novella then turned into a major motion picture before hitting the Broadway stage in 1951 starring Audrey Hepburn as the title role.…

One concept that stood out to me in the Technology theme is in the article called Shell Shorts by Amber Bravo it talks about learning the evolution of material and design of chairs. According to Amber Brown, Eames and Saarine made a plywood chair and started experimenting with molding the chair differently with curves and dimensions with the plywood ( Bravo par.2). They would construct and reconstruct the chairs mold with different dimensions, for example, 2D and 3D to see what style is more successful. As they have experimented with the different styles, in the article Bravo states that Eames and Saarine were influenced to enter in a “competition in 1940 had three-dimensional curves. For this they won first prize, but it was only produced in very limited numbers and not anywhere near to their desired quality” ( Bravo par 3).…

The author is inextricably linked to the graphic memoir in numerous, complicated ways. Unlike other written mediums, the writer has the unique ability to organize their thoughts, memories, and sense of self within two separate temporal locations. One level sees the writer as the all-seeing powerful being examining and interpreting memories in retrospect through the narrative voice, and the other allows the author to function as a character within the narrative who may physically interact with the story, albeit both roles are explicitly constrained by the limits of their memory. The graphic memoirs Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and Maus by Art Spiegelman are both autobiographies that work in very similar ways to deal with the lasting impact…

On April 4th, I had the opportunity to attend the Broadway show “Sweat”, which was located at Studio 54, 254 West 54th Street. Before I attended this show, I had no idea what I was going to expect from the title of the play. However, when I approached my theater professor near the start of the show, he informed me that this play would “have me in tears.” Afterwards, I was very excited because I wanted to understand how a play called “Sweat” could deeply touch a person. After watching this performance for about 2 hours and 25 minutes, I can conclude that the play was indeed both very emotional and remarkable in its storyline.…

Lisa Landrum, a professor in the Faculty of Architecture, centres her research on the relationship between performance and architecture. In her early years Landrum frequented the theatre and took note of the similarities between architecture and theatre. She concluded both require compelling forms of representation to create a believable reality that does not yet exist. She explains that architects need to represent the context their project, much like how the actor needs to deliver a narrative to an audience in a convincing manner. Landrum soon discovered that various ancient Greek plays refer to an architect as someone who is working toward the common good.…

In their book “Scenic Art for the Theatre: History, Tools and Techniques”, Susan Crabtree and Peter Beudert emphasized, “Don’t draw things; draw relationships. It’s so simple: just put every brush stroke in the right place.” The quotation basically summarizes the job of a scenic designer, who is responsible for bringing the world of the production onto the stage. The scenic designer (or set designer) is expected to fulfill five basic goals in order to design an overall concept for the play.…

I chose to look more in depth at chapter 11, Theatrical Space and Production Design. I never really thought about the different areas in which a play could be performed and realizing that there were many different spaces and stages in which a play could be put on I was very intrigued. It was also interesting to read about how much work goes into production design. By reading this chapter I became very well informed about not only the different stages and performance areas in existence but how much time and effort went into all of the production design, which in turn helped me to choose which stage area would be best for a production of Noah and His Son.…

After watching the performance Rooted by Tim Miller, one specific moment that I found particularly powerful was when Tim kept mentioning, that he and his partner, were getting married on the day the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage. I found this to be the most powerful because it made sure that everyone in the audience understood the importance of that specific day. Tim and his partner, Alastair, were married for over 20 years, but their marriage wasn’t recognized by the United States government, but on that day, they were granted all rights given to heterosexual couples. This moment was the most powerful to me because you could hear his excitement and sigh of relief in his voice at the same time.…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…
