1. In the summer of 1964, Lily Owens is visited by bees that show up nightly in her bedroom. This young teenager lives with her father—who she nicknames T. Ray—and a black nanny by the name of Rosaleen. Amazed by the buzzing insects, she tells T. Ray about it. When she leads him to her room, the bees were gone, and her dad threatens to punish her as he always does. Lily is reminded of her mother, Deborah, who was shot when Lily was only a toddler. The horrific memory of her mom’s death stays with Lily throughout her life. It only gets worse for Lily from here, for T. Ray then tells her that she is the one who killed Deborah. One day, Lily goes to town with Rosaleen. They run into some men who start to anger the older woman. As a result, Rosaleen …show more content…
Each of them had differing personalities, making the experience memorable. Lily spends most of her time with August, who helps Lily learn how to work with bees. The two get closer, causing Rosaleen to act childish around Lily. She only does this because she does not want Lily to get hurt. The chapter ends with Lily confused on what to do and where to continue from.

2. “Martha Whites were a form of punishment only T. Ray could have dreamed up.” (5).
According to contemporarylit.about.com, “Martha Whites” were grits that Lily was forced to kneel upon whenever she got in trouble. “… and if I snuggled one out, say, Lost Horizon, stuck under my shirt…” (15).

Merriam Webster defines the word “scuppernong” as a “cultivated muscadine with yellowish-green plum-flavored fruits” “… and a can of Red Rose snuff.” (62).
