The first object that Pearl seems aware of and focuses on multiple times in many scenes is the letter A. The Scarlet Letter has a deep meaning to it and Pearl is the living scarlet letter, “the scarlet letter endowed with life” (Hawthorne 93). Hester had an order from Governor Bellingham for some special gloves that were to be fringed and embroidered. Due to the governor placing this order she had an excuse to speak to Governor Bellingham about hearing that they were going to take Pearl away from her. Hester decided to dress Pearl just like the scarlet letter, because she wanted to dress Pearl like the object that she represented, “arraying her in a crimson velvet tunic, of peculiar cut, abundantly embroidered with fantasies and flourishes of gold-thread” (Hawthorne 93) . Her clothing contributes to her symbolic purpose. This makes a tie between Pearl, the scarlet letter, and Hester 's sin. Pearl is the scarlet letter in flesh.
