In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis," by James Hurst, he gives us a hint about death. Doodle can walk because Brother taught him, and he felt bad. The message Hurst was trying to tell us in the short story is, pride is harmful. First off, when Hurst says "The death of a red bird is bad luck... especially red dead birds" he is hinting to prevent Doodle's death. Brother is looking back on his past and his feelings of guilt and regret make him realize the bird is a warning of death. James Hurst also says "even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers," the author wants us to know that Brother noticed the Ibis is dead, but beautiful.
