The main figure of speech that is used throughout the whole poem would be repetition. From the first line to the last line almost all of them start with "Remember". This figure of speech tells us that the author is telling us to remember everything from the past, the present, and the future. The author used it, in the same way, he tells us it, he is using it to tell us to remember another figurative language used in the poem was personification. An example of a personification in the story would be when the author, Joy Harjo, says "Remember the moon, know who she is. I met her in a bar once in Iowa City." For instance, line four in the poem reads, “With torn and bleeding hearts we smile.” This line really captured my attention because it made me think back to a time when I was a bullied in ninth grade by a group of girls who harassed me every day by threatening me and calling me names. It was very difficult for me to during this time because I had grown up with these girls since Pre-K and even had classes with each of them. Just like the poem mentions, I had worn a mask of happiness myself, when really I was completely torn apart on the inside. At this time in my life, I was unable to understand how that particular group of girls got the pleasure of knocking someone else down emotionally and physically.…

Not only does poetry include an endless variety of subject matter, but also an endless diversity of interpretations. However, with the great array of interpretations possible, it is easy to get lost and trapped searching for a deeper meaning, which is exactly what the teacher warns the students of. All the teacher asks is for the students to "water-ski across the surface", acknowledging the author "on the shore", not to dive into the depths of the water and never return. Imagining the poem as a hive full of honeybees to which you must listen to, or as a color slide to which you must "hold up to the light", illustrates the approach that the teacher wants the students to take, and the priority to enjoy the beauty of the…

With the passing of time, memory can magnify and distort what is important to an individual's life. In Gwen Harwood’s poetry, Harwood portrays these aspects through her poem, ‘The Violets’ and ‘Father and Child.’ The poems both represent time and memory in different ways which gives the audience an impression that everyone is different and memories all differ from person to person. It also shows that the lessons we learn from the past differ and are sometimes false memories. As time passes an individual’s memories becomes distorted and sooner or later an individual will only remember what was significant about the memory.…

Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…

This poem became popular for it told human beings to not pursue their dreams and goals on Earth for they will all be taken away upon death. Instead of focusing their efforts on the world around them they should focus on the world to come. This is a different view than the modern worldview which would tell individuals to appreciate their time on Earth and constantly strive to become everything they can. The poet writes, “Call not your own what one day ye may lose; The world will take back all it give you to use. Let your hearts be in heaven, your thoughts in the skies; Happy is he who the world can despise.”…
