“If we don’t end war, war will end us”(H.G Wells). Castellanos was a poet during the 50’s who wrote following the 2nd world war. She was interested in political issues like helping peasants get land. “Chess” is about two chess players entering a mental war but not knowing why. They started as friend and ended up wanting to destroy each others. Now they’re sitting and waiting to figure out how to eliminated the other side but no one ever wins. The theme of “Chess” by Rosario Castellanos is that war is a pointless game that man keeps playing, but will never win.
The first literary element that illustrates the theme is attitude. For example the narrator says, “Because we were friends and sometimes loved each other,... we decided to play games of the mind” (line,1,4). This shows the narrator’s tone in the beginning of the poem is calm, relaxed and casual. The author is using the casual tone to demonstrate how war is pointless. This shows the board is divided into pieces, which represent two countries going to war with each other. The author is using a metaphor to reveal that war, like chess, is a game with no game. The narrator also says, “We learned the rules, we swore to respect them, and the match began” (line, 8,9). The author is comparing the rules to “Chess” to strategies of war. Both sides agree to them, but they are made up for the game. The author is showing how war begins, just like any other games.
