When do you know when a line is crossed? Does the line get drawn once someone gets hurt or is it drawn before the problem even occurs. Additionally, if a person were to cross a line without the line being drawn whose fault is it, and when is it okay to cross this line? When it comes to Paul it seems that the word “Line” is not in his vocabulary. He crosses many people's lives causing emotions such as: Anger, Pain, Love and Sorrow. In the play, Six Degrees of Separation, many people would say that he did cross many lines. When it comes to these points I completely agree, but I would also have to counter the fact that maybe these protagonist deserved it. Together they were art dealers and in the beginning they were at brinx to selling the Kandinsky. All they needed to do was persuade a friend of theirs in Africa named Geoffrey to help them sell the art piece to any Japanese people. While they were negotiating with the friend from Africa in their New York apartment an abrupt intrusion came to the door. Little did they know that what lay behind that wooden door would become their wisest teacher. It was Paul, a young man who had been practicing his students for a while. Throughout the whole night Paul is able to bring these characters out of their comfort zones. He is able to persuade them about the importance of cooking you own dinner at home. Everything Paul does for these people is seen as amazing. The audience is almost seemed unconscious for the rest of the night in “aww” of Paul. Just in one night Paul is able to receive money and keys to properties just within hours of talking to everyone that he has confronted within the …show more content…
Although Paul might have been satisfied with the idea that these people respect him for the qualities that they saw in him, the real test begins with climax. His real test was to find out that even the wisest caucasian people can still fall into the category of racism. In the beginning of the play we notice small subtle racism remarks throughout the play. For example when Geoffrey was talking to Flan about this grand plan to bring as many known black people to Africa for an event. Although this is not enough evidence, Paul needs more proof to show that racism still lives wherever anyone breathes. Paul causes each one of the characters to crack and we notice the same reaction with almost every character. They all run to the police asking to arrest this black crack head. He addressed social issues and discrepancies in a way that was beyond his time. Watching his performances, whether it be stand up or a sketch, one cannot help but hear the source of inspiration for many of the famous comedians that have surfaced since his time.
