Back in 1967 the average income per year was $7,500.00. The novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton is a story about the injustice of social class of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967. Ponyboy is one of the unfortunate souls living in this time with the worst situation out of anyone. Ponyboy is a Greaser which means he is the lowest class, poor and hated. Ponyboy and his gang are Outsiders. The title relates to the story because Ponyboy and his friends are outsiders, Ponyboy and Johnny leave the town and live by themselves and Ponyboy is different than everybody else.
The title relates to the story because Ponyboy and his friends are outsiders. For example, Ponyboy and his gang get physically attacked by the Socs and their gangs and they end up badly injured or close to death. For example, “I mean-even before the Corvair pulled up beside me and five Socs got out. I got pretty scared… So I lay still, swearing at them between gasps. A blade up against my throat” (Hinton 7-8). This quote clearly shows that the Socs physically attack and abuse Ponyboy and his gang. Also, since Ponyboy and his gang are Greasers, they are not liked by many people. For instance, at school and outside of school most of the Socs do not talk to Ponyboy and his gang. In the story, Ponyboy and Johnny got jumped by the Socs and Johnny ends up killing one of them. The two teenagers are now on the run and do not have anybody but each other. They are alone and helpless and they are truly outsiders. They are far away from their home and they are scared. For example, “Don’t cry Pony, we’ll be okay. Don’t cry…” I leaned against him and bawled until I went to sleep” (Hinton 66). This quote clearly shows that they are scared and alone.
