The Boy Who Drew Monsters by, Keith Donovan, was a great read over the summer. Keith Donovan is an American novelist, the author of the national bestseller The Stolen Child, Angels of Destruction, and Centuries of June. This book takes place on the coast of Maine, in what the Keenan’s call their dream house. A young boy, Jack Peter Keenan lives alone with his two parents and is home schooled by his dad while his mom is at work . Jack Peter is trapped inside his own head. When Jack Peter starts to imagine and dream of monsters and creatures, he starts to draw them. After, he starts to draw them his parents start to see and hear stuff out of the ordinary. “The adults, even his father, laughed again. Jack Peter hated it when people laughed at him, and he wrung the bloody towel in his hands and waved it to make them quit”(110). This piece of evidence shows that Jack Peter hated when people laughed at him. Jack hated when people didn’t take him seriously or didn’t believe him. This relates to me because I am a sensitive kid, and I hate when people single me out. I also don’t like it when people laugh or make fun of me. Knowing this about how Jack Peter feels, it helps me understand him better as a character. This helps me understand the actions and thoughts that are going through his head.
In conclusion, The Boy Who Drew Monsters, by Keith Donohue was a great read. I recommend this book to anyone who is into a suspenseful read. This book was definitely a page turner, and it was hard for me to put it down. This book turned my idea of reading around. Jack Peter is a confusing, interesting, and playful character. His parents are going through troubling times and are going to have to figure out how to help their son before it’s too late. What will happen to Jack Peter and his family?
