When reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian readers may come to the conclusion, that Mr. P. was right in the assertion that Junior must leave the reservation forever in order to become a success. Though I agree that Junior needed to leave the reservation to find success in traditional education, Junior can find a different kind of personal growth and success through the people and culture on the reservation. Junior’s academic success was definitely contingent upon him leaving the reservation and going to an outside school, however, education is not the only way to measure success, and junior is able to find personal success within the reservation in regards to growing into a more mature version of himself, and learning the value of embracing your culture. These successes though different are equally important. I think Alexia makes it a point to show that although the reservation has its problems, Junior is still able to find some success in both the reservation and in Raridon. This is an important part of the novel as is shows growth throughout the novel. At the beginning of the novel Junior has the mindset that the only way for him to find success is to leave the reservation, but by the end of the novel, Junior realizes that success can be found both in and out the reservation.
Throughout the novel Alexia uses both characters from within the reservation and at Raridon to help Junior grow both personally and academically. Alexia’s use of characters from both parts of Juniors life emphasis the point that although Junior must leave the reservation to find success in some areas of his life, the reservation and the people on it, still have valuable knowledge to pass on to Junior and should not be written off as a lost
