In Glory, it is set in Boston in the 1860’s during the American Civil War. Captain Robert Shaw is injured in the Battle of Antietam and sent to his hometown of Boston. As he is there recovering, he meets Frederick Douglas and is convinced of the mistreatment of African Americans and becomes interested in wanting to be the first Captain of an all African-American regiment of soldiers. Soon after he finds his second in command and receives enough volunteers to have a regiment, the Emancipation Proclamation is released. That requires all African American soldiers on the Confederate side of the war to go back to slavery, and then for the Union side, all soldiers were given a free pass to leave and go live a normal life, but all volunteers under Captain Shaw stayed with him. This was the start of something great, and he knew it. Before watching this movie I knew what the Civil War entailed and how it was the bloodiest war of the United States, and it had almost the most deaths in a war in history. But other than that, it was hard for me to really have my eyes opened to the suffering in class by just taking notes. Like I said before, being able to watch a movie on something like this …show more content…
The uniforms of the soldiers, the battles and order of events being correct and accurate, the suffering and different illnesses of soldiers like pneumonia and starvation. I also believe this movie correctly depicted the conditions of the African Americans like not having socks or shoes to wear while it was snowing, not having food but only hard and raw bread, and not having proper clothing to help keep them warm or comfortable. It really hurt me to watch a movie like this because I hate racism and sexism and all other rude human ways of thinking and mistreating those that are different not by choice, but by destiny. I feel that from a historical perspective, everything is perfectly depicted and
