Flapping Complacency Can you imagine a place where birds, harmless creatures, could bring up such terror and fear. No? Well Mr. Hitchcock has indeed brought that thought into a cold, suspenseful, reality. Spoiled socialite, Melanie Daniels is shopping in a San Francisco pet store when she meets Mitch Brenner, who is looking to buy a pair of love birds for his young sister's birthday. He recognizes Melanie but pretends to have mistaken her for an assistant. She decides to get her own back by buying the birds and driving up to the quiet coastal town of Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends his weekends with his sister and mother. With the antagonist in the story being the birds, it has to be the frightening part because normally we coexist with birds, quite lovely creatures as a matter of fact. As for most antagonists, we know what they are after and what they want to do. For birds that attack so spontaneously is extremely unpredictable! This adds to fear which makes this movie so scary. Also throughout the movie is an era of feeling condemned. Quite a few times in the movie, I noticed that they were suggesting that it was us human’s fault that the animals were attacking. For example, in the very beginning of the movie when Mitch is pretending that he thinks Melanie works at the shop, and he says doesn’t it just make you feel awful.
