Unfortunately, their code was found online and modified to commit cyber crimes by hackers. On the other hand, the captain was capable of getting Nicholas furloughed from prison in order to help him track down the perpetrators and his men who were using their code to commit cyber crimes. Since Nicholas was working with the government, he was a nation state actor. According to the Holt, Bossler, & Seigfried-Spellar, (2015), a nation state actor is a hacker at the behest of a government” (p.39). The reason why Nicholas is described as a gray hat hacker instead of a white hat hacker is because of his past. The reason why he was arrested in the first place was because he was committing computer crimes. On the other hand, the hackers were black hats. Their goal was to make a fortune doing pump and dump schemes and other cyber crimes. The reason why the hackers committed a pump and dump scheme in the beginning was to finance a bigger scheme using tin futures. One of the hackers named Sadak did not care about the people that he killed while he committed his crimes. He only had one goal in mind which was to show how powerful he was in the realm of hacking.
