In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as insane, arrogant, and skillful. Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he talks about how he finds joy in killing people for sport. “Hunting, Good God General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder!” (Connell 70). This quote shows that Zaroff is insane, because during that part Zaroff is trying to justify his cold-blooded murder. During this story,…

People only know what you show them about yourself, and when you finally show your true colors, it can come as quite a surprise to most. In the stories The Most Dangerous Game and Porphyria’s Lover both of the main characters experience great twists in another’s seemingly mild personality. The authors use characterization and dialogue(in the case of Porphyria’s lover it’s more an inner monologue) to portray that people can hide their true and sometimes evil ideas or intentions behind their innocent facades.…

He says, “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?” (Connell 6). Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a game where they try to kill each other. If Rainsford kills Zaroff or remains alive after 3 days he is allowed to leave the island. In my opinion this is an example of abnormal and violent social behavior. No one should think it would be a “game” to have two people try to kill each other for fun. Additionally, Zaroff has a training school. “We’ll visit my training school. It’s in the cellar. I have about a dozen pupils down there now.” (Connell 6). He has a cellar full of students getting them ready to fight him in his “game” and eventually kill them. I consider this to be psychopathic. There is no rational reason to do something like this. No logical person would prepare and train children or adults to kill each other in a…

The endorsed savagery of his childhood and early masculinity depleted the general of his compassion and ability to make moral judgments. His energy for the chase and love of the refined, in the interim, drove him to degrade human life. Truth be told, Zaroff even acclaim his pure breed dogs over the lives of the mariners he chases. Connell depicts Zaroff's sharp-pointed teeth and smacking red lips to dehumanize him and highlight his ruthless nature. Unexpectedly, Rainsford finds that General Zaroff is much more awful than the "rubbish" he contemptuously chases, without all feeling and humankind regardless of his appearing social…

In the 1800s, particularly before the Civil War, the most civilized and respected men in the South were those who owned large plantations, were very wealthy, and owned slaves, but today, most people tend to think of slavery as incredibly cruel and as one of the darkest parts of the United States of America’s history. In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, General Zaroff comes off to Rainsford as a successful, wealthy man who is can be trusted. Zaroff is a Cossack, which Rainsford respects because he must be a good hunter. Zaroff gives him a room in his luxurious home and free meals after he fell off of his yacht. In the story “the Most Dangerous Game” General Zaroff is the obvious antagonist . He’s the antagonist mostly because he hunts other humans for nothing more than sport. Also a fact being the two have completely different views on what and how they hunt. General Zaroff got bored animals claiming they became too ‘easy’ to kill, but with humans they have the ability to think and survive in a more unique and creative way. Rainsford however while also enjoying hunting for sport hunts animals, and believes that Zaroffs idea of hunting humans is just purely murder. These two opposing thoughts can clearly create a tension between the two “ ‘I want to show you my new collection of heads’ , will you come with me to the library?’ ‘I hope’ said Rainsford ‘that you will excuse me tonight General Zaroff’” ( Connell 32). This quote can clearly display the opposing ideas the two share. General Zaroff who wants to have some fun toying with Rainsford , then Rainsford who fully despises General Zaroff's ideas of amusement and…
