This article is a personal viewpoint and experience of author David Guterson, who visited this mall for few days. This article was published in Harper’s monthly magazine. In this article, the author shares his experience while roaming around different parts of the mall. He describes all details about the mall like 10000 permanent jobs, parking places around 12, 750, and 17elevators & 44 escalators etc. then he talks about the design and interior of the mall. He says that mall is a vivid imagination for people. Then he talks about the huge infrastructure and design of the mall. The author also shared what his experience was, when he met with different people in the mall. While talking about the mall, he also analyze the American people and their values, which he believe that values are changing in America and materialism is quickly taking over. So, he states that the mall of America is going to strengthen those materialistic values. He explains that how materialism and such types of malls are affecting Americans both on individual and society levels. He ends the article …show more content…
He gives an idea through this article that American society is indulging into materialistic lifestyle and such malls are strengthening this materialism through their huge marketplace and attractions. He believes that people should be provided entertainment in their free time, but this is not the way to do so. I somewhat agrees with the author on his materialism point. He is right that materialism is affecting society very badly, but his overall criticism on the mall is not justified. The world is becoming a global market where huge businesses have their own significance. And like other small malls, there is nothing so awkward about the Mall of America.
