Summary Of The Last Time By Charles Baxter

I went and saw the author Charles Baxter at the Reedley College the other day, it was the first time I had ever attended anything like that before, like sat in while an author read a few paragraphs from his book. It was very interesting being able to hear pieces of a book knowing we could ask question to the man who wrote the book himself. The room was filled with people, so many people that they had to bring in chairs, people were even sitting on the stairs, and in the front on the floor. The room was pretty warm for it being cold outside and raining but that’s understandable since there was a lot of people in one place. It was pretty cool to hear what others wanted to ask the author and his responses to the questions he was asked. He was very honest about the answers he gave. …show more content…
It was interesting to me when he said that his parents didn’t approve of his career choice but went down that path anyway and actually became a famous author. I have never given much thought about props in a book when I read them until he mentioned about remembering what you put in the book because you can use it later on in the story. For reasons of helping a character be saved or even kill a character off with a prop you have written in the story. He made me realize when we write a piece of any kind of paper that we are making up as we type, we control the limits, the limits of when people come into a story, when they leave, how they die, or even how main the character

Neal Shusterman has written many heart-touching and award-winning books, and over time, has become one of the most influential authors of our generation. Two of his books were Full Tilt and Unwind. To describe Full Tilt quite briefly, the story was about a teen boy named Blake, who traveled to a carnival in another dimension to save his younger brother, Quinn. To save him, Blake had to get through seven twisted rides, each of which dealt with one of his many fears. On the other hand, Unwind is about three teenagers, Connor, Risa, and Lev, who all manage to cross paths on their ways to get Unwound.…

    1. What, if anything, did you feel the book was missing? Was there more you wish you could have learned about this “character”? I don’t think this book was missing anything at all because it had something for everyone. What I mean by that is most people when they see think “Oh this is a football book no way i'm going to like it” but in reality it a book that anyone can like not just sports fans.…

Tyler Palka History 100D 1491 Book Review Charles Mann is a very intelligent journalist who wrote the book 1491 New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus, he is simply just trying to get things right when it comes to history and more specifically pre Columbian America. Charles Mann’s thesis is to educate others on Native Americans because he feels everyone before him was wrong or didn’t do a well enough job finding out the truth. Charles is a very persuasive journalist I think because of all the resources he used and the way he presented it in the book. Throughout the book Mann essentially tries to look into or paint a portrait of what human life was like in the Americas before the arrival of Columbus and the European history in some…

Amy Cuddy interpretation of the nonverbal, physical ways that people compose themselves was informative and interesting. I agree that when people mentally and physically open themselves up to others, it is a clear reflection of their confidence. I liked that she compared humans to the animals in the wild, providing an example of birds opening their wings compared to celebrities reaching out with their arms. As an observer to see a leader hunched over is far less reassuring than one that is standing tall and embracing the crowd.…

The author Charles Baxter read from his books, one about a teacher and another about someone who was in an accident. In the one first one he talked about a teacher who was telling nonsense to her fourth grade class. This teacher talked and talked, knowing that her students were listening attentively trying to absorb as much as they can from her rant. The kids were more interested in what she was saying than moving on to arithmetic. It showed how kids are very gullible.…

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

Donald Murray meticulously developed and laid out ten writing habits he performs in order to hone in on his writing potential. After a self evaluation I came to the realization I possess similar to habits to those of Mr. Murray, but I also have my own. The habit of awareness and connecting seem to interconnect for me. The book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster immediately came to mind. Foster discusses various interpretations of literature through quests, communion, themes, and of course symbols because “Everything is a symbol of something, it seems, until proven otherwise.”…

The Chosen vs To Kill a Mockingbird After many observations, I have come to the decision that Chaim Potok’s The Chosen exceeds Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird in the following areas: character development, making readers fell like they are watching from the sidelines, and creating great examples that people can follow. Throughout The Chosen, Chaim Potok displays his extensive vocabulary to describe his scenes and characters in his novel. Fortunately, his talents in writing do not end there. His ability to make readers feel like they are actually living and seeing what the character live and see stands above all other books I have read.…

It wasn't until the end of Popular Mechanics that I was truly was brought into the story. The final line drew me further into the story and made me think. I was impressed that a single line he was able to make this simplistic piece so much more memorable. I admired him, I admire this style of his so much that I wanted to mimic it, but that proved to be too difficult as I will later explain. I did however know from the beginning that I wanted to keep his ending, therefore I added it to the ending of my story.…

In Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson depicted clearly the unfair ways the poor and the incarnated were treated in the criminal justice system. Stevenson educated his readers about the death penalty, women’s prison, and youth being tried as adult in the criminal system without being to overwhelm and factual. Another way Stevenson brought his novel to life is through his characters. Bryan Stevenson makes you feel every emotion his character went through; it was as if we went through every tribulation the characters had to endure. Stevenson also made his audience experience every joy and heartbreak that he went through as their defendant’s lawyer.…
