Hatred in the South started growing and the anger started to become violent. The racism in the South was at its peak that a group emerged from it. This group was called the Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK. The KKK was a violent group made up of Confederate veterans who terrorized black people in the South. This group would dress in all white and also paint their faces in either black or red to “try” to make a statement. The KKK would mostly go after freed men who were political figures or associated with politics and also any freed man or women who they thought had any power. The KKK would torture, threaten, and even go to the extent to killing these freed men. The KKK went as far as killing at least 700 Republicans, which include the black leader known as William R. Meadows. Meadows were dragged from his home, shot, and beheaded right in front of his family. Lucy McMillan, a former slave in South Carolina, is being questioned about her own experiences she endured of white violence. Lucy McMillan was testifying in Spartanburg, South Carolina on July 10, 1871 by a Chairman. The Chairman asked her questions such as where she lived, if she was married, her age, and how she was affected by white violence. Lucy was a single mother of one, 46 years of age who lived out in the woods by the river. She explained how white violence was terrorizing blacks and how they threatened her. Lucy every night would sleep out in the woods because she was so afraid of the group KKK. One night they came along by her house and burned it down. Luckily, she managed to escape with her daughter because she was out by the woods. She mentioned that she saw many of them on foot and on horses, dressed all in white with their faces painted. Lucy also mentioned she knew some of them and that one of the white men she actually raised because she used to work for their family. The Chairman finally asked her if she knew the particularly reason for the KKK to burned her house down and Lucy answered that the White Men thought Lucy was bragging around how “she was going to make laws” and how she was going to own land.
